Rosanna Cappellato Award in Environmental Sciences
Professor Rosanna Cappellato was instrumental in building and sustaining the Environmental Studies and Sciences Program at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø. This award was established to perpetuate Professor Cappellato’s memory and to promote activities that advance environmental and wildlife conservation by a º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø student who embodies Dr. Cappellato′s passion for studying and conserving the natural world.
Students will be selected based on the following criteria:
1) The award will be used to support continued study, research, and experiences in environmental and wildlife conservation, including relevant foreign experiences.
2) A record of outstanding work, including coursework, research, and environmental activity (at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø, in the Memphis community, or at broader scales since arriving at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø) that demonstrates long-term promise in environmental and wildlife conservation.
3) Sophomores and juniors who are majors in a scientific discipline and who demonstrate a focus in wildlife and environmental conservation are eligible.
Applicants should submit a two-page statement describing (1) how this award would promote the student′s activity in environmental and wildlife conservation; (2) past achievements that demonstrate continued promise in environmental conservation; and (3) a proposed budget detailing how the award of approximately $500 will be used to further the student’s involvement in environmental conservation. Students should include a CV or resume and should arrange for a faculty member or other individual to submit a supporting letter of recommendation. All application materials (personal statement, list of courses, and letter of recommendation) should be submitted electronically to the chair of the Environmental Studies & Sciences Program by March 15. Nominations will be reviewed by faculty in the Environmental Studies & Science Program and the award will be announced at the annual Awards Convocation. Recipients are expected to present the outcome of their environmental experience(s) that were supported by this award to the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø community during the following academic year.
Sophomore Award in Environmental Science & Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies & Science Program at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø College has established the Sophomore Award in Environmental Studies & Environmental Sciences to acknowledge a sophomore who has demonstrated a strong dedication and interest in pursuing environmental issues. The award will reinforce the Environmental Studies & Sciences Program’s interest in cultivating and supporting students’ environmental interests.
To apply for the award, the student must submit:
- A personal statement (maximum length: 1 page single-spaced) that describes why the student chose to major in Environmental Studies or Environmental Science, how the student has engaged in environmental issues while a student at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø, and how the student plans to continue such engagement during the remainder of the student’s time at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø.
- A list of courses that the student has taken that count towards the student’s environmental major. For each course, the grade earned should be noted. At the end of the list, the student’s overall GPA and GPA in the major should be listed.
In addition, the student must arrange for a º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø faculty member to submit a letter of recommendation that describes the student’s dedication to environmental issues.
To qualify for the award, students must be current sophomores majoring in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of the fall semester of their sophomore year, and have been engaged in (or have plans to be engaged in) research, a creative activity, or an outreach/community enrichment program that clearly addresses environmental issues broadly defined to include (but not limited to): environmental law, environmental justice, environmental economics, environmental policy formulation, environmental impact assessment, environmental education, environmental engineering, environmental arts, and environmental science.
All application materials (personal statement, list of courses, and letter of recommendation) should be submitted electronically to the Chair of the Environmental Studies & Sciences Program by March 15. Senior Award in Environmental Studies & Environmental Sciences
º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø College believes that learning is a life-long pursuit. In support of this ideal, the Environmental Studies & Science Program at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø has established the Senior Award in Environmental Studies and Environmental Sciences to recognize the accomplishments of a graduating seniors in environmental fields of study. The award will reinforce the Environmental Studies & Sciences Program’s interest in the continued development of our Environmental Studies and Environmental Science majors.
To apply for the award, the student must submit:
- A personal statement (maximum length: 2 pages single-spaced) that includes:
- A description of how the student has been engaged in environmental issues both in and outside the classroom while at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø College;
- A reflection on how the student will put to use the ideas learned as an Environmental Science or Environmental Studies major at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø as the student pursues long-term career goals;
- A description of what the student plans to do during the upcoming 12 months, and how these plans relate to the student’s long-term career goals. If plans have not yet been finalized, the student should list any programs, internships, or jobs for which the student has applied, and how these opportunities relate to the student’s long-term career goals.
- A resume or a curriculum vitae that includes, at a minimum, the student’s name; major; major GPA and overall GPA as of the end of the fall semester; a section that lists specific environmentally related involvements (research, internships, volunteer positions, creative activities, policy initiatives, student groups) that the student has been a part of while at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø College; and the name of the faculty member who will provide a letter of recommendation.
In addition, the student must arrange for a º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø faculty member to submit a letter of recommendation that explicitly identifies the student’s participation in the Environmental Program at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×רÇø and dedication to environmental issues.
To qualify for the award, students must major in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of the fall semester of their senior year, and have been engaged in research, a creative activity, or an outreach/community enrichment program that clearly addresses environmental issues broadly defined to include (but not limited to): environmental law, environmental justice, environmental economics, environmental policy formulation, environmental impact assessment, environmental education, environmental engineering, environmental arts, and environmental science.
